Amsterdam

Brainport Eindhoven is the third largest startup ecosystem in the Netherlands by venture capital activity. But the metro area over-indexes on R&D intensity (especially semiconductor R&D). It ranked seventh globally in Dealroom’s recent Science Hub rank.

The metro area of Eindhoven is best known for companies like ASML (Europe’s most valuable tech company), NXP and Philips. It is located in the South of the Netherlands (Noord-Brabant province).

The name Brainport Eindhoven was introduced in 1997 by the mayor of Eindhoven to highlight the technological and economic potential of the region. The metro area of Eindhoven has about 800,000 inhabitants spread across 21 municipalities.

Venture capital & investment

Eindhoven is still a young startup ecosystem

By sector, we can see that Eindhoven has relatively more physical tech, which is characteristic of a deep tech ecosystem.

Eindhoven overindexes in Energy Tech.

The nascent stage is also evident by looking at the allocation of venture capital by stage. No true standardized series B and C rounds.
